Welcome to DomeHome Canada

The interest in unconventional homes is very high due to many factors. The high
cost of conventional homes is driving some to look at attractive alternatives. We
have seen homes made from a variety of materials, some interesting and some so abstract
as to question sanity of the builder. Depending on location there are homes build
from STRAW, RAMMED EARTH, TIRES, SHORT LOGS, BOTTLES ETC. However the most practical
and most efficient as well as the longest life home is the properly constructed
underground home. Made from poured concrete life expectance is in excess on 1000
years and coupled with efficiency and low maintenance these homes have a large following.
The demographics of interest are in our favor since the younger people have through
education a greater degree of understanding of energy conservation and environmental
factors. They are in tune with everything that is available in an underground home.
Also it appears that they are able to think out side of the box in most cases. We invite you to read further about our unique project.

In September we called in the excavator and stripped the earth from the roof down to the foam sheets that we originally installed on the advise of Terra Dome. This was a mistake and I had the gut feeling at the time but I was persuaded and it was a much cheaper way to go at that time. NOT. After the earth was removed I installed a layer of felt like cloth called filter cloth for the express purpose of having a clean substrate to spray the three inches of urethane foam on. This kept it off the dirt as contractors wanted. Worked well with minor exception as the foam cured it caused some shrinkage and left voids under the foam in several areas so we cut the foam and stood on it and refilled the gap to eliminate any cracking as earth was replaced. This would not have been necessary had we sprayed the foam on the bare or sealed concrete in the first place and again I will state.--NEVER USE SHEET FOAM ON AN UNDERGROUND STRUCTURE EVER. SPRAY FOAM ONLY AND USE A CLOSED CELL URETHANE FOAM. Last year we had to use the wood stove to keep warm and this year we cannot use it much since we get too warm very quickly. This is a 100% change from last year. I also poured a concrete pad in front of the garage and will install photos of it very soon if I can get Alex to give me some time. What a change having cement to work on for the vehicles using floor jack and creeper plus the house is much cleaner also. In early summer I will have the figures for propane useage that will include house heat, hot water, gas stove and clothes dryer. We are also heating the garage and it is not as efficient as the house due to big doors and possible air leakage but indications are very good at this time.I hope to add some info very soon since all I have to do is finish the kitchen island, vent system and some trimming and painting. See you soon. Royce/Tatiana
