Welcome to DomeHome Canada

The interest in unconventional homes is very high due to many factors. The high cost of conventional homes is driving some to look at attractive alternatives. We have seen homes made from a variety of materials, some interesting and some so abstract as to question sanity of the builder. Depending on location there are homes build from STRAW, RAMMED EARTH, TIRES, SHORT LOGS, BOTTLES ETC. However the most practical and most efficient as well as the longest life home is the properly constructed underground home. Made from poured concrete life expectance is in excess on 1000 years and coupled with efficiency and low maintenance these homes have a large following. The demographics of interest are in our favor since the younger people have through education a greater degree of understanding of energy conservation and environmental factors. They are in tune with everything that is available in an underground home. Also it appears that they are able to think out side of the box in most cases. We invite you to read further about our unique project.

Great news at last for us. The floor is thawed enough so I rented a skid steer to clear back the stone and excavate the floor down about 6 inches. It has to be below the footing to accommodate two to 4 inches of stone, two inches of Styrofoam. The way the contractor left it was disgusting with up to 6 inches above the footing in places so we have to remove all the stone carefully then store the stone and excavate the soil to a proper depth. This will cost me extra time and money through a foolish act and I hope they are reading this column. I may be able to spray on the AQUASEAL WATERPROOFING soon since the weather is due to be above freezing most of this week. If there is no dampness or ice on vertical walls then it will get the Aquaseal treatment. Next we will install 2 inches of Styrofoam on walls over lapping the seams and backfill the walls. This will make it much easier to access the roof for the roof treatment and other work to be done up on top. Will get photos of this week work and get them on site. Very anxious to get moved in. Bye for now. Royce/Tatiana

Yesterday we got started on heating areas of the floor to thaw so excavating can begin. We are posting some photos of our system and will keep you updated on effectivness of this process. Well drillers are on site and we will have our well in several days. The heat was supplied by one oil construction heater and the big wood stove and both put out a lot of heat but to keep running need someone there on regular basis for continuity.I tried to take photos but digital camera ate up another 4 batteries before I got to my part. Will get back soon. Royce/Tatiana

Sorry I have not updated much but there was not a lot to tell at this time. Weather permitting I am going to start localized heating of the floor to get ready to dig and we are installing fans in skylight wells to keep air moving so efforts are not lost. Guelph University students are deep into alternative housing project and our house is featured as underground alternative. We are finalizing contractors on heating, plumbing, electrical as well as media system to be installed. There are many exciting products on the market and some of our partners have exceptional quality and features that should not be ignored when you make a decision. We have found that the old saying "you get what you pay for" is 100% true. If you save 20% usually the product is 50% less but if your pay 20% more you usually get 30-50% more quality. You can only build so cheap. Take a good look at some of our partner's products they all fit our quality, enviromental and efficiency demands. The well should be installed before next update and I may have some utilities in place at that time. More photos to come as we start on the inside. Royce/Tatiana

This is about a far as we can go with out some heat inside to thaw out the ground to be able to dig trenches for the utilities. One temporary wood stove is in place and I am working on gathering up another with several fans so that we can melt old man winter. There will be an entrance door on garage soon then I will start up the heating process. We are hoping to have the well installed this Wednesday then whatever we can get done we will. Will have more to report soon. Royce/Tatiana
