Welcome to DomeHome Canada

The interest in unconventional homes is very high due to many factors. The high
cost of conventional homes is driving some to look at attractive alternatives. We
have seen homes made from a variety of materials, some interesting and some so abstract
as to question sanity of the builder. Depending on location there are homes build
from STRAW, RAMMED EARTH, TIRES, SHORT LOGS, BOTTLES ETC. However the most practical
and most efficient as well as the longest life home is the properly constructed
underground home. Made from poured concrete life expectance is in excess on 1000
years and coupled with efficiency and low maintenance these homes have a large following.
The demographics of interest are in our favor since the younger people have through
education a greater degree of understanding of energy conservation and environmental
factors. They are in tune with everything that is available in an underground home.
Also it appears that they are able to think out side of the box in most cases. We invite you to read further about our unique project.

Strongest apologies for not keeping up but we were doing nothing for so long then I went to work in Alberta and when I got home we went to work. Photos will be posted nest week. We poured a cement pad in front of the garage which will control the dirt and allow me to work on my vehicles as required since I will be able to jack and use axle stands safely. We stripped the earth off the roof and applied a layer of filter cloth and applied three inches of urethane foam and my thanks to K Seal of Waterloo for a great job.

I have just installed some photos of my expensive front door that is supposed to be top of the line but is not up to any standards that I am aware of. The photos show ice forming on the plastic center seal strip as well there are numerous air leaks that allow snow to blow in and the entire area around the door is cold and you can feel cold air coming in around most of it. This door was promoted as hi r value and superior in every way. I have found this company most ignorant to talk to and very slow in resolving any issues of which I have many. The door was pre-hung at the factory so there is no installation of this part to cause the problem. The company is called FIBERTEC WINDOW AND DOOR MFG. located in Concord, Ontario (North of Toronto). Their web site is http://www.fibertec.com - send them a message if you like telling them of what I have found with their product. I will be reporting on good and bad products as I find them. As for a good product I have had my new Russian made wood stove operating for over a month now and it is working very well. We are getting good heat from it with minimum of wood. We are heating a large 28x28 area with ceiling up to 12 ft. We use the fan to get more air movement as well we operate the ceiling fan to move the hot air down. I can fill the stove at 11PM and close down the air intake and flue control about 75% and in the morning at 8.00AM the stove is still hot with lots of coals in for start up again.I usually get up at 7 am and move the coals forward and add three logs then go back to bed and at 8am the room is hated to a good level. We intend to sell these stoves in Canada as soon as we get a UL safety rating. I have not found a stove that can put out this much heat and still be running 8 to 12 hours later. I am very happy with it and will get additional details as we test different burning combinations. Large wood works best to date. See you soon. Royce/Tatiana

Just checked my site and low and behold the last story I sent in did not appear. Photos were installed by Alex and they show the new Russian wood stove I imported to check out. It puts out lots more heat than the old air tight and I can get over 8 hrs burn on low setting. It can be controlled from air inlet and the flue has a valve. With the 7 tubes surrounding the fire box we get a good heat and at this time it is the only source of heat since the hydronic system is not functioning with any efficiency. We were able to get the blinds curtains up and nice improvement as well Tatiana and I went to work on the concrete blankouts and finished them ready for painting.
We found it necessary to re-do our finances in order to finish the home and this is on the go as I write. Lots of work getting the quotes in and working with the contractors. In a future write up I will tell you of some of the problems we had with products, procedures and contractors in building this home. Some of the products are very shabby in quality and the backup from the manufacturer is non existent plus they are ignorant and this will be told. I will also go into some detail on how to save a lot of time and money and eliminate most of the problems we experienced. Hope to see you soon Royce/Tatiana

I wrote an update on Aug 12 and installed it but in the meantime we changed web providers and in the change it got lost as well no photos were installed or transfered. We spent a week on the roof making some changed to prevent a possible problem. I had an excavator come in and remove about 18 inches of earth from entire roof then we made a membrane using Ames liquid rubber and a special cloth. The photos will show this in process as well as back filling. The intent was to prevent any water from getting to the concrete between the insulation and taking any heat away as it flowed. There was one area that we had a problem and that was the overhang and parapet wall where there were numerous leaks at the tie bar locations and this prevent me from finishing the outside of the front of the house. Water dripping in the winter causes icecycles which would damage any decorative trim. I will try to get Alex to install some photos this weekend. Keep in touch and I will try to keep the information flowing. Royce/Tatiana

I am trying to get back into my routine and giving as much information as possible. I will go into deeper detail on some items as well as provide some concrete idea of pricing and techniques that are involved. As you can see from the past photos we worked up the lawn and did the seeding. I rented a Steiner tractor with a Harley rock rake and the unit worked very well. Cost for the tractor was $18.00 per hr and the rock rake was $185.00 for the day and total for my work was 356.00 to work up the lawn and get rid of most of the rocks and stones. It was a full day of work and with the rain we got this week I am waiting for tel tale signs of green to appear confirmation of grass on its way. Keep in touch and I will try to do weekly reports with costs and other pertinent information. Royce/Taitana
