Welcome to DomeHome Canada

The interest in unconventional homes is very high due to many factors. The high cost of conventional homes is driving some to look at attractive alternatives. We have seen homes made from a variety of materials, some interesting and some so abstract as to question sanity of the builder. Depending on location there are homes build from STRAW, RAMMED EARTH, TIRES, SHORT LOGS, BOTTLES ETC. However the most practical and most efficient as well as the longest life home is the properly constructed underground home. Made from poured concrete life expectance is in excess on 1000 years and coupled with efficiency and low maintenance these homes have a large following. The demographics of interest are in our favor since the younger people have through education a greater degree of understanding of energy conservation and environmental factors. They are in tune with everything that is available in an underground home. Also it appears that they are able to think out side of the box in most cases. We invite you to read further about our unique project.

Sorry for the delay in writing but I was away for the weekend and have been busier than a one armed paper hanger with the hives. We have the carpenter full time working on the interior as seen on photos and plaster is done on three ceilings. The electricians will be in this weekend to run the wires and install outlets and that will be a blessing since we are operating out of one recepticle with all power tools. There has not been a lot of visible progress but as the plumbing and bathrooms come together we will publish more photos heck I might just add some as we go along. We spent a day cleaning up after the plastering to keep the dust down and that was a good suggestion and made life a lot easier. We purchased our kitchen and it should be in for pickup in two or three weeks. We have had the top soil spread about and are ready for seeding but we have to prepare the soil for the seed. Not much to report but there will be much more real sooon. Have the best summer of your life and bye for now. Royce/Tatiana

Big holiday weekend in Canada and USA, so Tatiana and I decided to work on the house since we will move in two weeks come heck or high water. We felt a toilet and shower were nice to have and plumber advised that tiles should be down before toilet gets set in place, so we laid out the floor and did our first floor tile job. We had a few misadventures but we managed to do a nice job on our first try and we are not afraid to tackle a more visible project since we did the washroom in the garage for the experience. I bricked up two chimneys on Sat and jone was great but the other was not good due to the flue not being true and square so I tore back my bricking and will re-do after I correct the flue. We have taken two swims in the pond and it is great, except the water is very cold due to the springs filling it and not having time to warm up. Top 12 inches is great but below that is a wake up call. Next week we will have photos of plastering, framing, maybe some electrical and plumbing going in. Getting real excited about living in this beautiful and efficient home. See you soon. Royce/Tatiana

July 1, 2005 (CANADA DAY)
As you can see from the photos lots has been done. Septic system is in and ready for final cover as soon as inspector views same. This week end I will brick the two chimneys while waiting for the excavator to return for the top soil replacement. Then we will seed the area and hope for some rain. But not too much. The budget has taken a wack on two fronts: one the extra excavating for roof fill and two the plastering is more costly than anticipated. It should go down a bit on next module due to experience on first one. This week I hope to have one toilet installed and get to work on a shower. We have purchased all materials and are ready to rock and roll. As soon as second ceiling is plastered we will do interior wall framing and electrical then final finishing. Have a great Canada Day and see you soon. I will have full technical details on septic soon.

By the time you read this, there should be 15 more photos showing the Nyatic septic system being installed. This system was ordered and installed in 3 days where normal timing is 3 weeks. The installation was done with the help of several companies that I will incorporate into my web site with links for easy viewing. The best part of this system is ecology. What comes out of the digester is near-drinking quality water legally permitted to be released into a stream (however, we will not do this). It is a very simple system and the only moving part is a small vane air pump to suppy air to the digester to keep aerobic bacterial in action. No agitators, no filters, no expensive maintenance.
All you have to do is respect your system for what it is and what it is meant to do. Do not flush foreign materials into any septic system. This includes items such as solvents, paints, oils and grease, chemicals. The systems are designed to handle human waste with some soap and small amounts of other personal cleaning agents only. This is true of all septic systems. even city seweres. On photos you will get a view of all stages of the septic installation. We started at about 9.00 am and when we left at 2.00 pm all contractors had to do was finish covering the system. It was a very professional installation and many thanks to all contractors involved and I will list them here in the near future. Bye for now and thanks. Royce/Tatiana

What a difference when things come together for a change. And of course a few surprises good and bad. Since we did not have sufficient earth to cover the house, we dug a huge hole in the ground and now we are filling this hole from earth taken from pond enlargement. This will eat up my holliday pay plus a bit more, but we will have a deeper pond for cleaner colder water and add some value to the property. I may stock it with fish and see how that works out. Next on adenda for underground house is delivery and installation of the septic system and landscaping of the roof. I will look into getting someone with a skidsteer to smooth off the roof to get ready for the top soil.
At the same time we may drill the post holes for the front ornamental iron fence recently purchased. When the first two modules are plastered, we can do the stick walls and do the final wiring and call for an inspection. Last thing is the drywall and finishing, then move in and do up all the details.
I am going to attempt to make my own poured concrete kitchen counter top and have purchased books on the subject. There are two ways of doing it: one is to make a mold and pour the concrete in the form, wait to cure and remove and place on cabnet, I intend to make in in place and the process in more messy since I have to grind the surface to desired finish but we will be working in an unfinished kitchen so the mess will be easily cleaned up. Today I have to pump out the pond so the excavator can work faster on Monday and pick up a load of tiles and bricks that Tatiana purchased for the bathrooms, kitchen, and other high traffic areas. Most of interior will be done in laminate flooring. Stay tuned and I will be giving frequent updates on our project. Royce/Tatiana
