Welcome to DomeHome Canada

The interest in unconventional homes is very high due to many factors. The high
cost of conventional homes is driving some to look at attractive alternatives. We
have seen homes made from a variety of materials, some interesting and some so abstract
as to question sanity of the builder. Depending on location there are homes build
from STRAW, RAMMED EARTH, TIRES, SHORT LOGS, BOTTLES ETC. However the most practical
and most efficient as well as the longest life home is the properly constructed
underground home. Made from poured concrete life expectance is in excess on 1000
years and coupled with efficiency and low maintenance these homes have a large following.
The demographics of interest are in our favor since the younger people have through
education a greater degree of understanding of energy conservation and environmental
factors. They are in tune with everything that is available in an underground home.
Also it appears that they are able to think out side of the box in most cases. We invite you to read further about our unique project.

Please accept apologies for not contributing anything for past month but there was not much to show and tell. We are working on several big projects that being: cemented pad in front of garage, asphalt driveway, and patio laid in front of house. Also, I will get the materials ready to install the membrane to waterproof the home. We have had some very heavy rain with no leakage inside but the overhang and parapet is a problem and I cannot finish the front with water leaking out since it will freeze and push off any decorative trim. I will let you know the products I use and how to use them as I go along. I will try my best to keep the information flowing so stay tuned as we forge ahead into this summer. Royce/Tatiana

Back again with some new photos showing the view from the front of the house but I took photos from the roof for more dramatic effect. Although the front is not finished I included a photo of this view and a photo of pile of scrap wood for my wood stove as well as shot of the drive way. It has a bit of a angle but has not been much of a problem this winter. The wood pile is twice the size of my Focus and was delivered for $220.00 and is all oak and maple. Burns very hot but lots of small pieces. I use a scoop shovel to handle this wood. One wheel barrel and a small cardboard box is all I need to keep us very warm each day. Maybe I should look into an outside wood fired water boiler? We have been busy trying to finish up one bathroom so we can open a B&B Bed and Breakfast so if any one wants to experience an underground home they can. We have really learned a lot about building this type of structure and I know of many ways it can be made less labor intensive and quicker to construct. Some of the ideas I have will save thousands of dollars in secondary work and make this type of home even less expensive than conventional with added savings in effiency enviromentally friendly. Stay tuned for more updates on the bathrooms and other items under way. Royce/Tatiana

Very sorry the photos are not installed but they have been sent and Alex will get them on possibly tonight. We spent the weekend on various projects including trying to get the satelite dish pointed to right salelite with no good results. I have ordered in the installer to set it up since the dish has some mechanical problems. I have photos of the new fan mount as well as some shots of the kitchen as it comes together and our new cat door to let the boys in and out. It works great and has settings to let them in but not out or locks them in only as well as in and not out or both ways. It is activated by a magnet on their collar so no other cat or animal can activate it. There are photos of the wood stove which is doing a good job of heating the house especially in the living room area. I have not been too happy with the floor heat and am searching for cause of high fuel consumption and low output in relation to energy used. Using the wood stove gave me a base line for comparison and since I can easily heat the area with very little wood I know that the walls and roof are not the problem. I am consulting with my contractor and checking to see if the temperature of the water in the piping is too low since heat transfer works better at higher temperatures. I will get this all sorted out sooner than later so in the mean time take a look at the photos and pass on the information to your interested friends. Have a good one and keep in touch. Royce/Tatiana

I applolgize for not keeping up whith the site and I have had many comments on this topic. We have been most busy with completing some details that were important to us. I have had the wood stove installed and the effect is wonderful. The heat it gives off is most gratifying even though I stored my wood 150 meters away. This way I get warm two ways, carrying the wood and burning it. We have been concentrating on the kitchen area and activating the appliances such as built in oven, new refrigerator, installing final cabinets and trying to figure out how to do the island. Last week I installed the satelite dish so we should be back on media. Out internet is line of vision wireless and very high speed which I like very much. My web man was away and has asked me to take many photos of the house in winter and I will do this and have photos installed no later than this weekend. Overall I am very happy with the house with exception of some contractors that have not performed to my satisfaction and have not followed instructions and caused problems for me and themselves. This I will overcome as usual.Keep in tune and I will have many photos as promised in several days. Royce/Tatiana

Not much being done over Christmas since we went away to visit the children and friends. I hurt my lower back three weeks ago and am trying not to agrivate condition then Tatiana did the same to hers but with the help of a very good chiropractor in Drayton we are recovering but never fast enough. I did spend some time attaching some of the kitchen cabinets in a perminent fashion but we cannot finish the counter cabinets since we now have to run a 220 volt line to a built in oven where I planned a gas oven. Gas stove is operating now and we had the professional installer in to check out the wood stove situation. This should be completed early new year. My next project is to install some of the fans in the skylight wells to circulate the hot air that rises to this point. My web master Alex is in Moscow with his future wife until after new year then I will get some photos of these items. I still have some moisture problems with livingroom ceiling and Terra-Dome the prime contractor is unwilling to do any thing to corrrect their work at this time. Keep this in mind when you go to look for a contractor. Had they been licensed in Ontario I would have had a legal warranty as is they just don't seem to grasp the seriousnes of the problem. Come spring when things dry out I will excavate that portion of roof and overhang and take corrective action to seal up the porus concrete. Hope you all have a very successful 2006 and keep in good health. Bye for now. Royce/Tatiana If you wonder about some typo.s and spelling I try to proof each insert but I do not have spell check and I become blury eyed so I miss some. Sorry
