The interest in unconventional homes is very high due to many factors. The high cost of conventional homes is driving some to look at attractive alternatives. We have seen homes made from a variety of materials, some interesting and some so abstract as to question sanity of the builder. Depending on location there are homes build from STRAW, RAMMED EARTH, TIRES, SHORT LOGS, BOTTLES ETC. However the most practical and most efficient as well as the longest life home is the properly constructed underground home. Made from poured concrete life expectance is in excess on 1000 years and coupled with efficiency and low maintenance these homes have a large following. The demographics of interest are in our favor since the younger people have through education a greater degree of understanding of energy conservation and environmental factors. They are in tune with everything that is available in an underground home. Also it appears that they are able to think out side of the box in most cases. Up date on Energy consumption
I think I mentioned that my propane use was under $1800.00 for period of Sept 08 to May 09 for some reason I was over my latest statement from FS Partners my propane supplies shows that my full heating season last year averaged $149.00 per month and that included my home heat,gas dryer,gas stove,and hot water. Total was $1488.00 for that period of time. I must mention that I did use about 1.5 cord of wood but the thermostat is in the hall about 35 feet from the stove.

August 2009
Not too much to say at this time except I have to sell the dome home due to lack of income. It was a good run and with most of the problems of construction solved all I have to do is finish it but funds are lacking. A word to the wise from a man that knows --when you have a plan for a project and you know that plan is the only way it will work out stick to the plan. Do not let anyone or anything get in the way. My plan was to get it done quickly and open a B&B but I ran into obstacles that prevented the plan from completing and now I have to part with my home. Not what I wanted.

December 28-2007
Back again with more photos of late summer work. As I mentioned we poured a pad in front of garage and photos to show also photo of planting 140 ground cover plants on the roof mostly silver juniper. It should look really great in 2 to 3 yrs. Around the skylight we planted a plant with red berries that spreads out after you trim any new growth that grows verticle. See you again in the new year.

Finally I will get some news entered for 2007 and I have to report that it is all good news this time around. I have been working in Alberta and time is not on my side for working on the house but we did some major improvments and this I am reporting on.

Active News:

Strongest apologies for not keeping up but we were doing nothing for so long then I went to work in Alberta and when I got home we went to work. Photos will be posted nest week. We poured a cement pad in front of the garage which will control the dirt and allow me to work on my vehicles as required since I will be able to jack and use axle stands safely. We stripped the earth off the roof and applied a layer of filter cloth and applied three inches of urethane foam and my thanks to K Seal of Waterloo for a great job.
